From a young age, multi-instrumentalist Gub (Liam Gubbins) has been heavily involved in music. Growing up in the renowned Howard family (Goanna) music was always the central focus of daily life. Throughout high school, Gubbins played in multiple bands and studied music. At the age of 14 Gubbins began recording at Studio 52 in Collingwood with his band ‘Bonney Ranch’. Bonney’s Ranch’s Single ‘Blood and Bone’ earned the band the opportunity to record an EP sponsored by JB HI FI.

At age 19 Gubbins moved to Melbourne to pursue a digital media degree, where he became exposed to a new vibrant music scene that heavily changed his interest and sound. After a few years DJing he began releasing music under his solo project ‘Gub’. His second single ‘Pick Me Up’ gained industry attention after it was added to Spotify Editorial Playlists ‘Fresh Finds’ and ‘Indie Arrivals’. In-between recordings, Liam was coordinating music events in his hometown of Warrnambool and joining Marcia Howard’s band regularly as a bass guitarist for festivals & gigs around Australia.

Gubbins began recording his debut EP last year on Lummi Island in the United States after quitting his job in Australia to pursue music. After two months writing and recording on the remote Lummi Island Gubbins returned to Australia to continue recording. “It was a great time, I finalised a few of my earlier releases and wrote a lot. Some of the tracks from that period have made it to the EP but a lot didn’t.”

Gub’s EP is a reflection on a breakup recorded over the course of a year. Written, recorded and produced by the multi-instrumentalist, the music is a reflection on a changed lifestyle after the end of a relationship. Gub’s dynamic style draws influences from a mix of genres including alternative, indie, neo soul and electronica. Throughout the debut synths, heavy bass lines, vocals and busy guitar layers are interwoven over a strong percussive backdrop.

Gub said he never expected it to be a breakup album. “I began the project such a long time ago that I wasn’t sure what it would be. But during the last covid19 lockdown I wrote and recorded four of the songs that made the EP; the other two I already had.”

Gub is due to release the first single off his debut EP ‘Changes’ September 10.
The release of Changes will be followed by Gub’s debut EP available October 15.
